Whimsical northern lights

Good places for northern lights

Good places for northern lights are not easy to predict- but you can get forecasts with the help of different programs and apps, which are in many ways matching well. But often a high prognosis can cause less northern lights and a low prognosis can prove to give huge northern lights. It simply has to be outdoors. But the rule of thumb applies - the farther north the greater the chance to see the northern lights. Also try to get out of the urban environment where atmospheric disorders are in the form of the streets and cars. Total darkness increases the chances. During the first part of January 2022 you could see really nice northern lights over Stockholm. Although it does not belong to the usual.

Abisko is one of the world's best places to see the northern lights and here you will be able to see the northern lights almost every night. This also due to lower risk of cloud shadow. Examples of fast northern lights.

This autumn evening it was a very strong and clearly northern light that moved quickly, which can mean a little faster settings on the camera. Here I photographed with 4 second shutter speed and the largest aperture on the camera, 2.8. ISO was 800. At different speeds in the shutter speed you have to try it out and here fit 4 seconds well as the northern light moved quickly, a longer shutter speed had made the picture even more green and had not given the pattern in the same way as with a shorter shutter speed. Diffuse northern lights

This northern light image is created with a headlamp to light up the ice on Torneträsk, a northern light appeared on the horizon and here the camera was on a tripod with 30 second shutter speed, aperture 2.8. In 30 seconds you can walk around with the headlamp and shine down against the ice, test and see the result to play with light, ISO 800

Foot houses and environments.

The picture below was taken in Gammelstad Kyrkby, an evening that turned out to offer strong northern lights. It may be good to check before how much lamps and other strong lights that can interfere in the picture before starting to photograph. Here were lamps but the only lamp that shone was the one that lit up against the church which made it all easier. The camera on the stand in the middle of the church village, and then waiting for the perfect light. The picture is photographed with shutter speed, 6 seconds, aperture 3.2 ISO 1000. The northern light moved quickly and here no longer need to shutter speed in the camera to get it, but again - depending on how strong and weak northern cane you have to test forward with shutter speeds.
